Why are fabs so afraid of defects?
Because in semiconductor manufacturing, one tiny defect can destroy an entire chip.

A modern chip contains billions of transistors working together flawlessly. But it only takes:
• A microscopic particle
• A small scratch
• A slight process variation
• A tiny misalignment
to break a connection or short a circuit. And when that happens, the whole chip fails.

What this means?
Not every chip on a wafer works. That's why fabs track yield.
Yield = Working chips / Total chips
Even a small increase in defects can significantly reduce yield, especially for larger and more complex chips. This is why semiconductor fabs operate in ultra controlled environments with strict particle control, advanced filtration systems, precise handling protocols, and continuous process monitoring.
Because one defect in the wrong place = dead chip.

The bigger picture
• Smaller nodes → higher sensitivity
• Larger chips → lower yield
• Better control → higher profitability
In semiconductor manufacturing, perfection isn't a goal. It's a requirement.
And yield is the difference between working silicon… and wasted potential.
