What is Quartz

Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Quartz is one of the most common mineral on the face of the Earth. It is found in nearly every geological environment and is at least a component of almost every rock types: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. It frequently is the primary mineral, >98%. It is also the most varied in terms of varieties, colors and forms. The major varieties and types of quartz include rock crystal, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, ametrine, jasper, carnelian, and agate. These varieties of quartz are often used in jewelry and for ornamental purposes. There are many different varieties of quartz, several of which are semi-precious gemstones. Since antiquity, varieties of quartz have been the most commonly used minerals in the making of jewelry and hardstone carvings, especially in Europe and the Middle East.

Benefits of Quartz

Quartz is everywhere, from lasers to timepieces to jewelry. It is a conductor of energy. This is why it is so beneficial to carry around, whether you are wearing it around your neck, keeping it around in your pockets, or even keeping it in your office and at home. Notice the clarity it offers during meetings or at your home.

Quartz is an excellent stone to help you meditate. It helps you to let your thoughts flow more easily and clear because it's an extremely soft and powerful crystal. It is possible to place it in your hands or make it an eye-catching focal point while you sit in meditation.

Quartz is composed of oxygen and silicon, which are among the most abundant elements on earth. This means that it can aid you in aligning with your goals, so they fit into the grand scheme of the Universe. Take a piece of Clear Quartz with you everywhere you go to remain focused and crystal clear.

Quartz can help bring clarity in times of confusion, overwhelm or require direction. Place it in your hands while you reflect, and notice the insights that come to mind. It also helps you concentrate on a larger picture, so keeping it in your hand whenever you think about or plan your daydream is a great way to experience the benefits of Clear Quartz.

Quartz can enhance the healing work you're performing and boost the strength of any other crystals you use. Wearing it while practicing yoga, keeping it near while you receive massage, or carrying it in any modalities involving the mind, body, or spirit can lead to more feeling.

Types of Quartz

Purple quartz: Amethyst

A beautiful gem used mostly to make jewelry, amethyst quartz is a variety of purple quartz that takes on this hue due to the presence of iron in its crystal lattice. Its name seems to derive from the ancient Greek “Amethystos” or “not drunk”. This derives from a legend that sees as the protagonist the god of wine Bacchus who used to vent his anger on human beings when he was inebriated. One day he broke his anger on a young disciple named Amethyst by having her attacked by tigers. Artemis, goddess of the hunt, in order to defend the young woman, decided to transform her into a quartz stone statue which Dionysus then bathed with his cup of wine, transforming it into purple quartz which will later take its name from the young woman, Amethyst.

Rose quartz

What is rose quartz? Undisputed symbol of femininity, love, compassion and sensitivity; rose quartz is the most used stone of all in crystal therapy treatments, a discipline of ancient Indian origins that promises to absorb the negative energy of the body and rebalance physical and mental well-being through the use of gems and crystals. As far as the chemical composition of rose quartz is concerned, it belongs to the previously described group of macrocrystalline quartz, composed, that is, of silicon dioxide, whose crystals are visible to the naked eye. Like all quartz in this category, it is formed in pegmatitic or lava rocks and has the property of piezoelectricity. Rose quartz meaning comes from its beautiful pink color, which can vary becoming more or less intense depending on the inclusions of other minerals.

Citrine quartz: yellow quartz

Citrine quartz is a variety of crystalline quartz with calcium dioxide ranging in color from yellow to red to orange. The color of citrine quartz is due to the presence in its crystal lattice of traces, more or less intense, of iron in the trivalent form. Compared to amethyst, yellow quartz changes the oxidation state of iron and it is quite rare to find it pure in nature as most of the citrine quartz types on the market are nothing more than amethyst quartz varieties chemically treated until they reach the characteristic yellow or orange color or through a smoky quartz smoking process. Citrine quartz is found in volcanic and pegmatitic rocks, often in deep cavities and the main deposits are found in Bolivia, Brazil, USA and Madagascar. As for the price, yellow quartz is quite cheap and can range from € 10 to € 100 per carat, which can increase depending on the color, clarity and brilliance of the stone.

Rock crystal: hyaline quartz

Hyaline quartz, also called rock crystal or mountain crystal, is a variety of very pure, colorless quartz and, usually, unlike milky quartz, perfectly transparent and therefore free of inclusions. The most widespread quartz stone on earth, rock crystal has deposits that are widespread all over the world: in Russia, Canada, Germany, India and especially in Brazil. It is found inside plutonic rocks filled with hydrothermal waters rich in silicon oxide. A lava stone with a thousand magical and chemical qualities, quartz occurs in nature in both microcrystalline and macrocrystalline forms. As for the price, it varies according to purity, size, shape and cut, but all in all it does not tend to exceed € 50. Hyaline quartz can be easily found in jewelry and costume jewelry stores but also on the internet or in herbalist shops, in this case sold and marketed by virtue of its therapeutic properties on the body, mind and spirit, capable of improving meditation, relieving physical pains and balance energies, especially male ones.

7 Tips to Choose the Right Quartz Colour for Your Worktops

Search online
The internet can be a great resource when trying to figure out what kind of kitchen or bathroom worktops you would like to invest in. Social networks such as Pinterest or Instagram are a great way to explore ideas and figure out what you like.

Look for available colour options
On our website, you can see the whole selection we have. Before coming to the showroom, it can be a good option to look for the available options, so you can narrow down the selection. Discover our supreme range, marble effect, bookmatched quartz range or the classic range to get more inspiration.

Visit the showroom
Once you narrowed down your choices, you can visit the showroom to see them in person. But don't write off the other options, maybe some colours will appeal to you more once you see them in person, while others will less.

Ask for samples
Once you are at the showroom, you can ask for free samples you can take with you. Samples can help you see whether the colour you opt for will match your cabinets and the rest of the room. Once you visualize the whole picture in your head it will be a lot clearer whether that is the right colour for you or not.

Consider the pattern
Patterns make a great part of each quartz slab. They make them unique and differentiate them one from another. The most common patterns are veined and granulated. Among these patterns, there are differences in their intensity, colour and opulence. If you just don't know what colour to go for, it may be easier to first choose which type of pattern you want.

Consider your home style
If you still haven't decided which colour to go for, consider what you already have in your home. Probably a certain colour appears more often than others. That colour can be a great choice because it will merge easily with what you already have in your home.

Choose cabinets first
The other way to go about it is to choose the colour for the cabinets first and then choose the worktop colour accordingly. Choose the colour that will pair well with the cabinets and make a nice composition with them.

Process of Quartz

Raw Material
When it comes to the manufacturing process of engineered quartz stone, the process starts with the manufactured quartz materials selection. It could be any quartz product such as quartz sand or quartz granules. As explained above, Raw quartz is selected after the manufacturing process is finished at a quartz manufacturing industry like Unique Crystal Minerals.

Blending
The selected raw quartz is crushed and then, blended under a ratio of 93% quartz aggregates to 7% resin binder along with other additives.

Slab Pressing
Furthermore, the mixture will be compacted to form the slabs using the vacuum and vibration method for about 100 seconds at 100 tons pressure. Using this kind of process, it can minimize porosity while decreasing water absorption.

Heating
After that, the slabs will undergo the curing process using a kiln at 85 degrees for about half an hour. That is to attain all the necessary properties for stain and impact resistance. To accelerate the curing process, steam or oven can be used. Once this process is completed, the produced slabs will undergo gauging, calibrating, polishing, and then prep up for the packing process.

Cooling
After curing, the slabs are held upright with the help of a clamp and cooled for 24-36 hours.

Trimming
The edges are trimmed and leveled.

Quality Verification
With the help of the engineered quartz manufacturing process, there will be consistency and uniformity in the shade and dimension. As a result, it saves time during the construction process. Although the engineered version resembles the natural stone's patterns, it offers a more consistent color, pattern, and texture, and uniform appearance. Besides, since they are man-made, they can be easily fabricated in large sizes, which can result in better aesthetics along with fewer joints.

How to Maintain Quartz

Routine cleaning
Though quartz will resist permanent staining when exposed to liquids like wine, vinegar, tea, lemon juice, and soda, or fruits and vegetables, it's important to wipe up spills immediately—before they have a chance to dry.For dried spills or heavy stains, your best bet is a glass or surface cleaner, a nonabrasive sponge (sponges designed for nonstick pans), and a little elbow grease. Keep a plastic putty knife handy to gently scrape off gum, food, nail polish, paint, or other messes that harden as they dry. Should you find yourself confronting a particularly sticky situation, your stain-busting might require a couple of extra tools.

Removing cooking grease
For left over messes, use a degreasing product, Kitchen degreasers loosen and remove the grease from the quartz countertop surface.

Removing permanent markers
Should you find an ink or permanent marker stain, moisten a cloth with or a comparable product, and rub it into the stain. Rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove any cleanser residue.

Deep cleaning
Daily wiping and attention to spills and messes will satisfy your countertop's basic daily maintenance requirements. But experts also recommend an overall deeper general cleaning at regular intervals. For best results, spray a generous amount of a nonabrasive surface cleaner over your countertop and let it sit for 10 minutes. Wipe away with a non-scratch sponge.

FAQ

Q: How can you tell if quartz is good quality?

A: The thickness, color hues, percentage of resin, and percentage of quartz minerals in the slab determine the grade of the countertop. Choosing a good grade ensures that a homeowner's countertop will stand the test of time.

Q: What thickness of quartz is best?

A: About 1.25 inches
While it's true that quartz can be made thinner — and it sometimes is — the standard thickness is the same. Both natural stone and engineered quartz countertops have a standard thickness of 3 cm or about 1.25 inches.

Q: Can you put a microwave on a quartz countertop?

A: Yes but not heat proof! While a quartz countertop is heat resistant, it can be damaged if exposed to too much heat.Quartz is a great material but has its drawbacks, including being difficult to install, expensive, vulnerable to heat and having visible seams.

Q: What percentage of quartz should be in quartz countertops?

A: 90-95 percent quartz
Unlike some other countertop materials, quartz can't call itself natural stone. By weight, it's roughly 90-95 percent quartz, and the rest of it is resins, polymers, pigments and flecks for patterning (if you go by volume, not weight, it's more of a 65-35 split).

Q: Is 2 or 3 cm quartz countertops better?

A: 2cm countertops may be ideal if you have a tight budget, prefer more detailed edge design, or if you plan on DIY installation. On the other hand, 3cm countertops could be a better choice if you prioritize longevity and sturdiness, even if it means spending a little more.

Q: Can I put a toaster on my quartz countertop?

A: In summary, yes, you can use a toaster on a quartz countertop. Just be mindful of the heat and take precautions to protect your countertop from potential damage. With a few simple steps, you can enjoy the convenience of your toaster without worrying about harming your beautiful quartz surface.

Q: Can you put a hot cup of coffee on a quartz countertop?

A: The low threshold makes quartz more likely to burn or break when in contact with heat. Therefore, you can put a hot mug of coffee on your countertop, but a searing hot pan or boiling pot of water could leave a burn mark. Over time, coffee mugs and teacups could leave burn marks as well.

Q: Can anything ruin quartz countertops?

A: While quartz has high heat-resistant properties, it is not completely immune to heat. Temperatures over 300° F can mean bad news for your countertop. Do not place hot pots or pans directly on your countertop, as extreme heat can damage the resin of the countertop's surface, resulting in discoloration.

Q: What will damage quartz?

A: While Quartz is more durable than many Natural Stones, it is not immune to damage from high temperatures. Prolonged or direct exposure to hot cookware can lead to discoloration or even cracking. The protective resins within quartz can become compromised when subjected to heat above 300°F.

Q: Are my cabinets strong enough for quartz?

A: Assessing Cabinet Strength:Look for sagging shelves, loose joints, or warped panels, as these issues can compromise the stability of your countertops. Cabinets that are in good condition and made from sturdy materials such as plywood or hardwood are more likely to support the weight of a quartz countertop.

Q: Can I put a cup of coffee on quartz countertop?

A: In summary, while it is generally safe to place a hot cup of coffee on quartz countertops for a short period, it is advisable to use coasters or trivets to protect the surface from potential heat damage.

Q: Does coffee stain quartz?

A: Tea, coffee or fruit juice can stain quartz worktops if left for too long. To remove the stain, use a three parts baking soda, one part water solution. Apply the solution onto the countertop and let sit for a few minutes, after which you can gently rub with a soft cloth and wipe away.

Q: Can I put a crockpot on a quartz countertop?

A: Do NOT use crock pots or electric skillets while in direct contact with your Quartz surfaces. Always place them on a trivet or cutting board to protect your countertop. As with any natural stone, certain exposure to heat may cause cracks due to thermal shock.

Q: Can an air fryer sit on a quartz countertop?

A: Quartz can handle high temperatures, but not for prolonged periods of time. This countertop is made up of 90% quartz and 10% pigments and resin. Granite Countertops should easily be able to handle the heat of an air fryer. Granite can handle up to 1200 degree F.

Q: Does quartz crack when heated?

A: Sudden exposure to extreme heat could cause the quartz stone countertops to crack. The resin (non-stone) component of a quartz surface will become damaged at temperatures hotter than 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

Q: Are quartz countertops considered high end?

A: Premium-grade quartz has superior durability, heat, scratch resistance, and minimal seams, making it an excellent investment for homeowners who want a luxurious, high-quality countertop.

Q: What countertops should I avoid?

A: Avoid countertops that are largely plastic such as cultured marble, solid surface, and those that introduce formaldehyde, like laminate. If using laminate countertops, specify that the substrate be made with a no added formaldehyde (NAF) resin. Additionally, CDPH-certified laminate materials are preferred.

Q: What are the 3 grades of quartz?

A: There are three distinct grades of quartz: first choice, commercial-grade, and second choice. Each grade influences cost, durability, and beauty, as well as the overall value of the home.

Q: What level of quartz is most expensive?

A: High-Grade Quartz: It is also known as first choice quartz and this particular level of quartz countertops cost is the most expensive one. It's the most durable level and comes in an endless range of striking colors, designs, styles, and patterns.

Q: What color quartz is the easiest to maintain?

A: When choosing what color quartz is the easiest to maintain, grey, black, and beige colors tend to be the most practical. These shades do an excellent job of masking everyday messes and require minimal cleaning to keep them looking their best.
