The National Science and Technology Award is a series of awards established by the State Council in order to reward citizens and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to scientific and technological progress activities, mobilize the enthusiasm and creativity of scientific and technological workers, accelerate the development of scientific and technological undertakings, and improve comprehensive national strength.

The National Science and Technology Award of the People's Republic of China is divided into 5 categories, namely: the highest national science and technology award, the national natural science award, the national technological invention award, the national science and technology progress award, and the international science and technology cooperation award of the people's Republic of China.

The National Technological Invention Award is awarded to scientific and technological workers who use scientific and technological knowledge to make major technological inventions such as products, processes, materials and systems. The National Technological Invention Award is divided into two levels: the first prize and the second prize. The total number of projects awarded by the National Natural Science Award, the National Technological Invention Award, and the National Science and Technology Progress Award shall not exceed 400 each year.
