With the rapid growth of the demand for high-bandwidth internal memory (HBM) in artificial intelligence (AI), NVIDIA is actively adopting high-capacity HBM to strengthen its own AI chips, and has selected SK hynix, Samsung, and Micron as three partners. Micron announced on June 5 that it is actively strengthening its technology and expanding production capacity, and expects to capture more than 20% of the HBM market share in fiscal 2024 and 25% of its market share by the end of fiscal 2025.

According to data from market research firm TrendForce, SK hynix's market share in the global HBM market is expected to increase to 53% in 2023, Samsung's market share is 38%, and Micron's market share is about 9%. Obviously, from the perspective of Micron's goal, its HBM business must continue to grow at a high rate to be possible, which requires not only technological leadership, but also support in terms of production capacity.
In this regard, Micron said that benefiting from its own advanced packaging and design capabilities, while integrating its own advanced process technology, is the key to the smooth progress of its HBM3E. At present, Micron has begun to develop a new generation of HBM4 products. In terms of production capacity layout, in addition to the United States, Hiroshima, Japan is also one of the locations considering expanding production.

At present, HBM3e is progressing smoothly and is expected to contribute to certain profits in the future, and the market share will be similar to the existing market share, emphasizing that customers are very interested in the company's HBM3 and HBM3e.
In response to the strong market demand in the HBM market, Micron also raised the amount of capital expenditure in fiscal 2024, which is expected to increase from US$7.5~8 billion (about NT$239.5 billion ~ NT$255 billion) to US$8 billion, mainly to invest in HBM production capacity.
It should be pointed out that at present, Micron HBM3E has passed the certification of NVIDIA, compared to Micron's competitor Samsung, which also means that with the shipment of NVIDIA's new AI chips, Micron's market share in the HBM market will be increased.
